On July 31, 1908, Edward Popple, a 29-year-old teacher and artist from Berkhamsted, England, set off on a 700-mile bicycle trip through the Basque regions of France and Spain. Popple rode a heavy, single-speed bicycle, often on sandy tracks or steep mountain roads, having adventures all along the way.
When Popple returned to England, he wrote a book about his travels that he illustrated with his own watercolors.
The trip was remarkable for its time, but the book lay forgotten for many years. Now the text and illustrations have been rediscovered and published for the first time.
The Charm of Travel note cards are just two examples of the book's enchanting illustrations. |
